Florida Keys Tourism
Unlocking the Door to the Florida Keys
Florida Keys Islands
The Florida Keys consist of a trail of beautiful islands that start at the southern tip of Florida. There are
dozens of islands, most of them connected by Oversees Highway, but some available only by boat. In fact,
you can rent an island for a week and enjoy a life of an outcast, only with a fully stocked bar.
The individuals who call the Florida Keys their home tend to think "outside the box" when it comes to living,
entertainment, work, and play. This is one reason why so many who visit this Florida area return again and
again. It is like a world away from the world, a place where time is always on your side and not a worry is
on your mind.
History of the Florida Keys
In the earliest days of history, the Indian tribe of Calusa discovered this tropical paradise. Once this tribe
saw the potential in the area of fishing, and hunting, more and more individuals were attracted to the
islands. When the Spanish discovered the upper parts of Florida, it was not long before they arrived
in the Florida Keys.
The ever-popular Ponce De Leon, who also had a hand in the establishment of the Nation’s Oldest City, St.
Augustine, Florida, experienced the Keys for the first time in the middle of May 1513.
When Ponce De Leon saw the set of islands he immediately designated a particular name for them. He
referred to them as "Los Martires". In English, this means "The Martyrs". This is because he thought he
saw the island rocks from a distance off. In his mind’s eye, the rocks resembled that of men who were
experiencing great suffering. We now know that this was long before he experienced the real beauty of
these tropical islands up close and personal.
Throughout the history of the Florida Keys, we have seen it as an area that has been affected by many
unfortunate events. It has been invaded by greedy pirates, an assortment of wild outlaws, as well as
entrepreneurs looking to cash in on the area and the treasures that the islands played host to. Today, it is
an oasis of extreme beauty and peace, at least most of the time, when the weather is calm and only a
gentle breeze helps to keep you cool.
Florida Keys Weather
There are two seasons in the Keys: hot and humid summer,
roughly from June to October, and warm and much drier
winter, from November to May. The ocean water temperature
reaches over 80°F in the summer, but even in the winter
always stays above 70°F, allowing corals to grow in the
shallow sea.
Florida Keys Tourism is sometimes affected by Tropical
Storms. They may happen mostly in August, September, and
October, and occasionally cause an evacuation of tourists or
all inhabitants.
Diverse, warm, sprinkled
with tropical breezes, and
blessed with exquisite
scenery, the Florida Keys
are among the most
popular and sought after
travel destinations in the
world! No wonder Tourism
in Florida Keys is well
supported by great hotels
and a variety of attractions,
many of them associated
with the beautiful ocean.
